Charley's answer
You should pray as much as you want to. There are no rules on how often or how infrequently one should pray.
We know that Adam and Eve walked with God in the cool of the evening daily so there's a starting point. Make it daily.
Perhaps the question should be put differently. How close would you like to be to God. Prayer is a great way for us to deepen our relationship with our Heavenly Father.
I can say with earnest that I pray everyday thoughout the day because I spend time just talking to the Lord and listening to what He says. I also try to schedule quiet time to follow the scripture "be still and know that I am Lord."
Yes we are called to pray for situations, people and events but God is such a loving God and because all He wants is to walk closely with us, I also like to talk to Him without a shopping list of things/answers I need in my life. I like to be in His presence, I like to hear Him speak to me. I like to be still and revel in the fact that I know He is Lord.
Part of my prayer time involves worship with music (CDs), part of my prayer time involves speaking/singing in tongues, part of my prayer time includes reading and thinking about scripture and writing down what the Holy Spirit reveals to me, part of my prayer time involves requests and most of my prayer time involves thanking the Lord for all that He has done and what was accomplished on the Cross.
I might do only one of these things in a single "quiet time" with the Lord but I try to be balanced and dynamic and that's why my prayer life isn't a chore or something I "should, ought or have" to do it's something I enjoy and look forward to.
God doesn't love you more because you pray more, and He doesn't love you less because you pray less. He loves you and His love is complete. It is you who will love God more, the more you spend time with Him.
The bible teaches us that we love Him because He first loved us. We could never out-love Him but we could all have richer, deeper and more dynamic relationships with Him if we spent more time with Him. Think about the people you love; you want to spend time with them and your relationship deepens because of this. Well it's the same with God, draw close to Him and He'll draw close to you as it says in James.
I love the fact that I can call on Him any time of the day or night because His Word says the Holy Spirit is with me as a helper and that He will never leave nor forsake me and so it makes perfect sense to talk to God throughout the day (and listen out for Him) too.
Let's get rid of "religion" and get into relationship with God.
